Examples of Insurance Points for Selected Traffic Offenses

  • 12 Point offenses:

Vehicular homicide

Driving While Impaired

Pre-arranged Racing

“Serious” Hit and Run (Bodily injury or death)
  • 10 Point Offenses:

Highway Racing (Not pre-arranged) 
  • 8 Point Offenses:

Driving While License Revoked
  • 4 Point Offenses:

Hit and Run (Property damage only)

Reckless Driving

Passing a Stopped School Bus

Speeding in Excess of 75 mph
  • 2 Point Offenses:

Illegal Passing

Speeding more than 10 mph over the limit with speed over 55 mph but less than 76 mph

Speeding 66 to 76 mph in a 65 mph zone

Speeding from 56 to 65 mph in a 55 mph zone

Following too closely

Driving on the wrong side
  • 1 Point Offenses:

Speeding at 10 mph or less over the limit in an area with a limit of 55 mph or less

Examples of Traffic Violations which may result in you losing your driving privilege.

  • Speeding over 15 mph over the posted limit while driving over 55 mph.

  • Too many license points - 12 in 3 years or 8 in 3 years, after getting the license back following a revocation.

  • Two or more charges of speeding in excess of 55 mph but less than 80 mph.

  • Two or more charges of reckless driving in a 12 month period.

  • Speeding more than 75 mph where the posted limit is less than 70 mph.

  • Driving While Impaired.

  • Driving while License Revoked.
